A light coating of oil, seasoned with salt and pepper, then flame grilled. This is the easiest and most delicious way to cook grilled sweet potatoes.

No slicing and long prep times, cooking sweet potatoes whole on the grill is 10x better than using your oven.

Grilling potatoes is crazy easy and pairs perfectly with grilled meats such as my Tomahawk Ribeye recipe.

I wanted to include more potato recipes on the site due to my Smoked Hasselback Potatoes recipe & Traeger Baked Potatoes recipe on this site being so popular. These grilled sweet potatoes also go great with a great T-Bone Steak or Baby Back Ribs.

Ingredients

The word of the day is 'simple'. Let's keep it simple when making these grilled sweet potatoes. They don't need much to make them shine!

Four sweet potatoes on wood cutting board with a bottle of oil, butter, salt, and pepper in dishes.
  • Sweet Potatoes (whole)
  • Oil (avocado or olive oil)
  • Sea Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Butter
  • Parsley (chopped)

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Four sweet potatoes on wood cutting board with a bottle of oil, butter, salt, and pepper in dishes.
  1. Step 1: Rinse the potatoes with cold water and dry off with paper towels.
Poking holes in potatoes with fork on wood cutting board.
  1. Step 2: Using a fork, poke holes in the potato ½" deep to release steam and prevent exploding.

  1. Step 3: Coat the potatoes with oil and season with salt and pepper.

  1. Step 7: Remove aluminum foil from potatoes and continue grilling them directly on grill grates for 15 minutes.

  1. Step 8: Potatoes should be ~200°F internal temperature and probe tender when tested with fork. Continue grilling if not tender.

  1. Step 9: Cut a slit in the top of the potato and garnish with butter and Parsley. Enjoy!

Hint: Pre-heating the grill and allowing to run for 5 minutes will burn off any remnants from previous food cooked. Clean with a grill brush (affiliate link) before placing food on grill.

Substitutions

Not a fan of certain oils or sweet potatoes? You can swap it up to fit your taste.

  • Russet Potato - instead of sweet potatoes, russet baking potatoes will do nicely.
  • Olive Oil - I use avocado oil a lot when cooking, but olive oil or vegetable oil will substitute nicely on these grilled sweet potatoes.
  • Unsalted butter - the outside of the potatoes will have a nice salty flavor, but the inside will not. That's why I used salted butter. If you are watching your salt intake, unsalted will also give the potato a great flavor without the extra salt.

Equipment

Grill Baby Grill. Use whatever grill you have! These will turn out great on a $1,000 weber genesis grill (affiliate link), a pellet grill (affiliate link) like I am using, or a $50 charcoal you have had for years.

The best grill to use is the one you have. Don't worry to much about having the latest and greatest.

Storage

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. These will be good for 2-3 days.

To re-heat, the microwave is your best option. I normally don't like using a microwave when reheating food, but in this case I have found it to work well.

Top tip

Use heavy duty or grilling aluminum foil. It's thicker than regular foil. This helps prevent tears in foil when wrapping food and during cooking.

FAQ

Why poke holes in potatoes when cooking?

The holes allow steam to escape the potato when cooking which prevents them from exploding.

Do you peel sweet potatoes before grilling?

No. Leave the skin on when grilling. This keeps the potatoes intact. If you don't like potato skin, you can eat the potato and discard skin after eating.

Do I need to wash sweet potatoes before cooking?

Yes. Give the potatoes a quick wash under cold water and use a vegetable brush if available to remove any dirt.

Do I soak potatoes before grilling?

No. Normally soaking potatoes in water is required when making french fries, not grilling or baking.
